Objective: Reduced plasma phospholipid and essential fatty acids (linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, alpha linolenic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid and recinoleic acid) levels have been implicated in depressive mood by various studies. Plasma phospholipid and essential fatty acids (linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, alpha linolenic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid and recinoleic acid) were determined in depressed patients and controls.
Method: One hundred subjects consisting of 50 depressed patients and 50 apparently healthy non depressed volunteers, who served as controls, were selected for this study. Anthropometric indices (body weight, height and body mass index) and biochemical parameters (phospholipid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, recinoleic acid and arachidonic acid and phospholipid) were determined using standard procedures.
Results: The results showed a significant lower plasma phospholipid level amongst depressed patients compared with the corresponding controls (p<0.05), and the essential fatty acids; linoleic acid, arachidonic acid, alpha linolenic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid and recinoleic acid levels were markedly lower (p<0.001) amongst depressed patients when compared with the corresponding controls. There were no gender differences in the phospholipid and essential fatty acids levels.
Conclusion: This study showed a significant decrease in plasma phospholipid coexisting with a decrease in plasma essential fatty acids in depressed patients. Therefore, dietary supplementation of these essential fatty acids could be important in the management of depressive mood.

Résumé
Objectif : Des niveaux réduits de phospholipide plasmatique et d’acides gras essentiels (acide linoléique, acide arachidonique, acide alpha linolénique, acide palmitique, acide oléique et acide récinoléique) ont été impliqués dans l’humeur dépressive par diverses études. Le phospholipide plasmatique et les acides gras essentiels (acide linoléique, acide arachidonique, acide alpha linolénique, acide palmitique, acide oléique et acide récinoleic) ont été déterminés chez les patients déprimés et les témoins.
Méthode : Cent sujets se composant de 50 patients déprimés et de 50 volontaires non déprimés apparemment en bonne santé, qui ont servi de contrôles, ont été choisis pour cette étude. Des indices anthropométriques (poids corporel, taille et indice de masse corporelle) et des paramètres biochimiques (phospholipide, acide palmitique, acide oléique, acide linoléique, acide linolénique, acide récinoleïque et acide arachidonique et phospholipide) ont été déterminés à l’aide de procédures standard.
Résultats : Les résultats ont montré un niveau inférieur significatif de phospholipide de plasma parmi des patients déprimés comparés aux contrôles correspondants (p<0.05), et aux acides gras
essentiels ; L’acide linoléique, l’acide arachidonique, l’acide alpha linolénique, l’acide palmitique, l’acide oléique et les niveaux d’acide récinoleic étaient nettement inférieurs (p<0.001) parmi les patients déprimés par rapport aux contrôles correspondants. Il n’y avait aucune différence entre les sexes dans les niveaux de phospholipide et d’acides gras essentiels.
Conclusion : Cette étude a montré une diminution significative du phospholipide de plasma coexistant avec une diminution des acides gras essentiels de plasma, dans les patients déprimés.
Par conséquent, la supplémentation diététique de ces acides gras essentiels pourrait être importante dans la gestion de l’humeur dépressive. .
