Résumé
A case control study on the risk factors of manifest strabismus was carried out among primary school children in Ilorin South Local Government Area, to determine the risk factors of manifest strabismus in a group of Nigeria Children. Thirty two cases of manifest strabismus were matched with 32 controls. The studied risk factors were heredity, significant refractive error, prematurity and low birth weight. Heredity and significant hypermetropia were found to be significantly associated with strabismus, (p<0.05) odd’s ratio 19.8 and 8.0 respectively. The relationship between significant hypermetropic astigmatism, significant myopia, prematurity lowbirth weight and strabismus were not statistically significant (p>0.05 and odd ratios 1.0,1.5, 1.2 and 2.0 respectively). There was a strong association between heredity, significant hypermetropia and strabismus. Management of a child with manifest strabismus should include evaluation of the identified risk factors.
Keywords: Strabismus, risk factors, amblyopia, refractive error.
