Resum

This December 2009 issue of African Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences contains a variety of articles covering many areas of medicine and medical sciences. Articles range from epidemiological studies to laboratory diagnostic process.

Adejumo and Adejumo discussed issues of clinical ethics for nurses in Africa. In a rather longish article, problems related to patients making informed decision about clinical care and participating in research were examined. Olasoji et al. examined socio-cultural factors mitigating against good clinical care for patients with cleft palate in Africa. Eyelade et al. determined the validity of pain measuring instruments in Nigerian children.

There are two papers from Ile Ife, one described preliminary experience with laparoscopic surgery, and the second is a case report on prune belly syndrome.

From Maiduguri is a paper describing the histopathological review of breast cancer and its public health implication. Another paper of public health importance describes the presence of intestinal parasites in vegetables in open markets in south-western Nigerian. Laboratory based papers include hypoglycaemic and amylase inhibitory activities of leaves of the spondias mombin linn on rats and model for studying intracellular gene expression of mycobacterium tuberculosis.

As expected these papers reflect the diversity of articles from various discipline which the AJMMS is noted for, and they provide scientific information on various aspects of medicine in the sub-region.
